Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide
Gelco chimney cap installation in Miami typically runs $325 to $675 installed, depending on flue size, roof access, and whether the old cap needs cutting off or just unfastening. We stock Gelco-compatible caps and mounting hardware on the truck, so most jobs are done in a single visit. Most Miami homeowners discover their cap has failed the hard way: a rusted lid after a storm, a cap blown into the yard, or water stains spreading across the ceiling after a week of heavy rain. If you’re holding a broken Gelco cap or looking up at a flue with no cap at all, this page tells you exactly what to expect.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco chimney caps come in a few distinct lines, and the mounting approach differs between them. The most common in Miami homes are the Gelco standard single-flue caps with a fixed base that slides over the flue tile and secures with corner screws, and the Gelco multi-flue caps that span wider openings and need a masonry lip or bracket system to anchor. The part number matters less than two measurements: the outside width and length of your flue tile, and whether you have one flue or several side by side.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see weekly: Gelco caps are sized to standard flue tile dimensions, but older Miami homes built before hurricane codes kicked in often have non-standard tile sizes. A cap labeled “13×13” will not seat properly on a flue that measures 12 3/4 x 12 3/4 with irregular mortar joints. That’s why we measure on site before quoting, not after. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, so we match the right cap to the actual opening rather than forcing a model number.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: genuine Gelco caps use stainless steel mesh and a galvanized or stainless lid, and the mesh spacing matters. Cheaper aftermarket caps copy the look but use wider mesh that lets embers through. In a city where airborne embers during dry season are a real risk, that’s not a corner worth cutting. We stock Gelco and we also work with DuraFlex and HeatShield for liners and related components, so the cap we install is part of a system, not a one-off patch.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney chase. This usually means the cap’s rain guard has rusted through or the mounting screws have backed out, letting rain run down the flue instead of shedding off the cap. In Miami’s wet season this shows up fast.
- You hear birds or scratching sounds inside the chimney. Chimney swifts are common across Miami, and a cap with bent or missing mesh is an open door. Once they nest, removal is a bigger job than a cap swap.
- The cap is leaning or sitting off-center on the flue. Hurricane-force gusts and heavy afternoon thunderstorms loosen corner screws over time. A leaning cap pulls the flashing and lets water into the crown mortar.
- Visible rust streaks running down the masonry from the cap. This is galvanic corrosion, and it’s common in Miami’s salt air, especially within a few miles of Biscayne Bay. The cap is failing and staining the chimney in the process.
- Debris inside the firebox after a storm. A cap that’s lost its lid or split along a seam lets leaves, twigs, and wind-driven rain straight down the flue. You’ll see it in the firebox or smell damp soot at the damper.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A single-flue Gelco cap installed in Miami runs $325 to $475. The stainless-steel version costs a little more up front than galvanized, but in a salt-air city it typically lasts twice as long. Multi-flue caps run $450 to $675 because of the wider footprint and the extra anchoring points.
What drives the range: roof pitch and access. A one-story house in Coral Gables with a walkable roof is on the low end. A two-story in Brickell with a steep tile roof and a chimney that requires a ladder standoff is on the high end. Either way, you get a written price before any work starts, so the number on the invoice is the number you approved. That’s how we’ve operated since 2002 under the Garrison Standard, and it does not change based on how your roof looks.
Every Gelco cap installation includes removal of the old cap, cleanup of the flue-top mortar surface, new mounting hardware, and a written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap or the install fails within a year, we come back at no charge. No argument, no re-quote.
Typical Miami pricing:
- Gelco single-flue cap, galvanized: $325 to $400 installed
- Gelco single-flue cap, stainless: $400 to $475 installed
- Gelco multi-flue cap: $450 to $675 installed
- Custom-fit cap for non-standard flue tile: add $75 to $150

What you can safely check from the ground: whether the cap is visibly leaning, whether the mesh looks intact, and whether you can see rust or missing screws with binoculars. That’s a reasonable inspection. What we don’t recommend is getting on a Miami roof with a drill and a new cap. Clay tile roofs are unforgiving, ridges get slick with morning dew, and a fall from a single-story roof is a life-changing injury or worse. If the flue cap is on a two-story chimney, the risk multiplies fast.
Even when an owner successfully swaps a cap, we find the most common self-install mistakes are undersized caps that restrict draft, screws driven into cracked flue tile, and mesh facing the wrong direction. FAQs
In Miami’s heat and salt air, a galvanized Gelco cap lasts 8 to 12 years before it needs replacement. A stainless Gelco cap lasts 15 to 20. Houses near the coast, meaning within two or three miles of Biscayne Bay, sit at the bottom of those ranges. Call (786) 305-7861 and we can tell you which material you have now.
Sometimes. If the mesh is dented but intact and only a mounting screw has pulled loose, we can resecure it. If the mesh is rusted through, the lid is split, or the base is corroded, the cap is done and repair is a waste of your money. We’ll tell you which one you’re looking at before you spend anything.
Most single-flue Gelco installations take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re set up. Multi-flue caps take up to two hours because they need more anchoring points and we clean and reset the flue-top mortar surface first. You’ll get the exact time window when we confirm your appointment.
We stock the most common Gelco single-flue and multi-flue sizes on the truck, along with stainless and galvanized options. If your flue is a non-standard size, we measure on site and have the custom cap fabricated within a week. Call (786) 305-7861 with your measurements and we’ll tell you if it’s a same-visit job.
